“Cats are rather delicate creatures and they are subject to a good many ailments, but I never heard of one who suffered from insomnia.”—Joseph Wood Krutch
There is no entry for insomnia in Homeopathy for Your Cat. Just about all common ailments, however, from acne to ear infections to gum disease, are present, accompanied by Dr. Wolff’s sensible suggestions. Having died some years ago, Dr. Wolff was not available for interview, but his homeopathic remedies, developed through years of experience as a homeopath and a vet, continue to speak for themselves.
There are essentially two types of cat owner. The first type gets upset when Snowball throws up on the hand-loomed Persian rug. The second type gets upset when Snowball throws up. If you fall into the latter category, you may well want to consider homeopathy as a gentle yet effective alternative to a vet visit. As with humans, homeopathy for cats works on the principle that “like cures like,” just with much smaller doses of natural supplements. Of course, it also addresses a number of specific health concerns humans don’t tend to suffer from, like hairballs.
For the mutual benefit of our feline friends and finicky feline owners, North Atlantic Books is pleased to present Dr. Wolff’s suggestion for hairballs. Combining veterinary knowledge with common sense and homeopathic expertise, Dr. Wolff writes:
“It is only natural that during the cleaning of her coat, hairs enter the cat’s stomach and form balls there. These balls are subsequently vomited up after she chews on grass. In order to minimize the number of hairballs in your cat’s stomach, you should brush her regularly. The vomiting up of hairballs is nothing to worry about since every cat does it from time to time. You should only be careful that your cat always has access to fresh grass; otherwise she may vomit up her food…If the hairballs block the intestines, a teaspoonful of salad oil for young cats and a tablespoonful for older cats can work wonders. After six to eight hours, the blockage is gone…One weekly dosage of Sulphur 30 while the cat is shedding shortens the period of shedding.”
Your fine Persian rug may not thank you for this piece of advice, but your cat will. Don Hamilton, DVM and author of Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs approves, commenting that “Dr. Wolff has a clear understanding and empathy for cats, a refreshing attitude for cat lovers looking for reliable resources.”

Wow — I didn’t realize there was actually a book especially focused on homeopathy for the cat. Thanks for sharing the tip.
